Grandpa, the yummy burger and the steak dinner – 10th March 2011

Today was another food related day. It was the day of Grandpa’s funeral and because I was in Budapest rather than in the UK, Teddy decided it would be a good idea to have a meal in memory of him and she also suggested that I find out what Grandpa’s favourite food was. A quick phone call to Granny later and we found out that Grandpa’s favourite food was probably steak and that we should have something chocolatey for pudding. More on that later.

In the afternoon we decided to go out for a walk and go to a burger place that Teddy had been taken to before in an area of Budapest that I hadn’t been to. It was a tiny little basement pub which as far as we could tell, didn’t have a name and isn’t listen on google. In any case the atmosphere was great and the food was lovely. We both had a cheese burger and it was one of the best burgers we’d ever had washed down with some lovely mint lemonade which had proper chunks of mint, lemon and orange.

For grandpa’s memorial dinner we had steak. Beef isn’t particularly popular in Hungary so we had to do a bit of searching to get it, and because we could only get it from a butcher in a supermarket and we didn’t know how to ask for steak, we just pointed at the joint of meat that looked most like steak. That turned out to be a joint of top round, which after removing the bits of gristle was really rather lovely and tender. With that we had some of Teddy’s beautiful creamy mash, some blue cheese sauce, a Hungarian salad and some veggies.

To wash that down we had some lovely cakes from a Jewish patisserie called Cafe Noe just a few minutes away from Teddy’s flat. I had a lovely cream cake which mostly consisted of mousse with a slab of dark chocolate on top and a very light sponge on the bottom with some cherries. Teddy had a lovely coconut chocolate layer cake and we both had a coconut ball next to each cake.

So a pretty delicious day all in all and tomorrow we’re going to try and do something that doesn’t revolve entirely around food.

The Spag Bol – 9th March 2011

So after a long day travelling to Budapest and finally arriving just before the 9th began we had a pretty lazy day today. We started with Teddy going off to her lecture and me doing a bit of washing up, lazing around and making some pancake batter. Because we were busy the previous day we decided to have some belated pancakes; unfortunately we didn’t think to take any pictures at that point. After eating that pancakes we both felt pretty tired and decided to watch a quick episode of The Simpsons before going out for a walk (it was a lovely day) which turned into a 3 hour nap. A nap that presumably, we sorely needed. After much procrastination and angry birds playing Teddy’s sugar levels started to drop a bit and so we eventually got around to going out and buying some ingredients for some food.

The beginnings of the spag bol

The beginnings of the spaghetti bolognaise. Yum!

Once getting back from tesco though, Teddy found the energy to start cooking the dinner and she really outdid herself on that front. We had spaghetti bolognaise made in the traditional Italian style which Teddy explained to me in great detail.

We managed to get some really lovely beef mince from tesco which as well as having no food colourings was incredibly lean despite being very reasonably priced. With that we added some onions, garlic, white pepper, basil, oregano, salt, (red wine – I managed to pick the wrong one but it still turned out ok) parsely, bacon and tomato sauce. Half way through cooking the food we realised that we had forgotten the wine and needed some more tinned tomoatos so I was sent out on my own (for the first time) to go and get some more.

Surprisingly,  I was successful in this endeavour and I returned with the goods, albeit with the wrong wine. Upon cooking the food, we sat down to eat it, before settling down to watch pipi longstocking and then go to bed. Take a look at all the yummies below:
